$42,000 Gympie jewel heist alleged in court

A MAN accused of stealing more than $40,000 worth of jewellery from a Gympie store and wounding the shopkeeper, will spend the weekend behind bars.

Gympie Magistrates Court heard dramatic police submissions yesterday in response to the man's indication that he wanted bail.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Lisa Manns said the man, Troy Anthony Fitzpatrick, fled from Goodyear Jewellers in Mary St on Thursday, after grabbing a tray of 26 rings valued at $41,959.

Pursued by shopkeeper David Hetherington, Fitzpatrick was delayed by a courier driver and struggled violently as Mr Hetherington joined in efforts to restrain him, Sgt Manns said.

Fitzpatrick allegedly bit Mr Hetherington on the arm, causing a wound requiring treatment and disease tests.

Fitzpatrick had shown "a lack of respect for the community and a willingness to cause harm to people to avoid justice," she said.

He had an extensive criminal history from Victoria and Tasmania, with a two-page record involving violence, stealing and burglary.

Emotional scenes accompanied his claim from the dock that his life was ruined by a near-fatal attack involving major head injuries.

Magistrate M. Baldwin told Fitzpatrick he faced a "David and Goliath battle" to achieve bail without legal help and there was no duty solicitor until Monday.

"I'm not here to give you legal advice, but I'm fairly sure you'll fail today. I only have one side of the story," she said.

Mrs Baldwin had to reprimand a woman Fitzpatrick identified as his girlfriend, after repeated interjections from the public gallery.

A young woman identified as Fitzpatrick's daughter burst into tears as Fitzpatrick was led away to the watchhouse.
