MARTIAL ARTS: It has been the most successful year for the Gladstone Martial Arts Academy with a swag of medals and champions in its 20th year.
Older and younger students from the Rob McIntyre-coached academy competed in six tournaments this year with a collective 53 gold medals, 51 silver medals and 23 bronze medals.
The team also came away with two Queensland champions - Nate Gourley, 9, and 13-year-old Trinity McKenzie.
"It has been a fantastic year for our club in all areas but especially our Jiu Jitsu classes,” McIntyre said.
"Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is such a hard martial art, much harder and taking much longer to learn than others, so to see so many people commit to the training makes me so happy.
"The competition results are just a bonus, a result of the great curriculum combined with the effort of our students.
"The real reward is seeing people getting fit while really challenging themselves and getting outside of their comfort zone and seeing the kids grow in confidence week by week.”
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is considered a submission martial art because it has no punches, kicks or other strikes, instead it teaches how to control an opponent by grappling and forcing them to submit from arm and leg locks, shoulder locks and chokes.
In competition Brazilian Jiu Jitsu fighters earn points for take-downs, controlling the position on the ground, reversing position from bottom to top and can by earning more points or by making their opponent submit to a submission - called "tapping”.
Gladstone Martial Arts Academy regularly has 15-20 adults on the mat per class and the children's class for juniors aged 6 to 15 consistently has between 25 and 30 in each class.
McIntyre has been teaching Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Gladstone for 11 years and holds a 3rd Degree Purple Belt under Black Belt Master Daniel Lima.
He also holds a 6th Degree Black in Muay Thai, a 5th Degree Black Belt in Zen Do Kai as well as holding black belts in Arnis-Eskrima-Kali (Filipino Martial Arts), and a 5th Degree Black Belt in his own system of Mixed Martial Arts.
