TOP BATSMAN: Taroom-Wandoan all-rounder Cameron Phillips has an amazing average of almost 400 as he prepares for the grand final this weekend.
TAROOM-Wandoan all-rounder Cameron Phillips could be labelled as the Bradman of the bush after a magnificent season that has seen him make three centuries and average an astonishing 399.
Phillips spoke to the CT while he prepared for this weekend’s Chinchilla and District Cricket Association grand final against Jandowae.
The 26-year-old farmer has only played six games due to work and various social commitments, but after his first five innings of 68 not out (no), 101 no, 100 no, 20 no and 100 no, Phillips did not have an average because he had not been dismissed.
It was only a rare failure by Phillips in his last game before the finals against Brigalow two weeks ago when he out for 10, that saw him able to work out his startling Bradman-esque average of 399.
He was a bit modest about his season, given that batsmen who make triple figures have to retire in the Chinchilla competition.
"It would be good to see how I would have gone — I might have got out for 101 or made 160," Phillips said.
Amazingly, he said he didn’t feel in as good a nick as he had in past seasons.
Phillips said he used to make pretty quick tons and over-confidence was his biggest downfall, but his centuries this year were all tough, slow ones.
"I had to take a step back and concentrate more.
"I was batting worse to bat batter," Phillips said.
Taroom-Wandoan, lost one match all year, finished minor premiers and take on second placed Jandowae who won through to the grand final after the semi-final against third-placed Crossroads was rained out.
Taroom-Wandoan’s last game was a victory over Brigalow, where Taroom made 164, with Brad Wheeler (63) and Will Argus (29) doing the bulk of the scoring on a Chinchilla turf wicket with inconsistent bounce due to the moisture and humid conditions.
Brigalow were then bowled out for 128, with Neil Stephenson (33 not out) top scorer.
Phillips said similar conditions were expected for the decider this weekend.
He said the team who can bat the best in tough conditions would win the match, and was expecting a low-scoring final.
He said he hoped Taroom’s consistency would see them win.
