EAMON Sullivan's comeback to the pool as an individual swimmer has finished in disappointment after finishing last in the men's 50 metre freestyle final.

Sullivan finished behind the surprise packet of Frenchman Florent Manaudou, who out-sprinted hot favourites, United States' swimmer Cullen Jones (silver) and Brazilian Cesar Cielo (bronze), for the gold medal.

Suffering a poor start, Sullivan was always behind the leaders, and despite a strong back-end, could not prevent finishing with the slowest time of 21.98.

Sullivan, who suffered a disrupted build-up to the Olympics, admitted he had swam a poor race.

"The start is where you win it and starts have been letting me down," he said.

"It's probably been one of the worst (preparations) from me again ... (I've had) more downs than ups."

Meanwhile, Australian sister Bronte and Cate Campbell have missed out on qualifying for the women's 50 metre freestyle final.
