Despair for Blackburn as Wigan win

A LATE header from Wigan's Antolin Alcaraz has sent Blackburn Rovers crashing out of the English Premier League for the first time since the 1998-99 season.

Alcaraz's header three minutes from time secured a 1-0 win and also ensured Wigan avoided relegation.

Blackburn, the 1995 champions, will be joined in the Championship by Wolves and either QPR or Bolton.

Meanwhile West Ham United moved one step closer to a return to the EPL after downing Cardiff City 3-0 at London's Upton Park.

Captain Kevin Nolan, Ricardo Vaz Te and Nicky Maynard scored the all-important goals.

The Hammers were already 2-0 ahead on aggregate after winning the first-leg last week in Wales, and will now wait to see who they take on at Wembley in the Championship play-off final.

The other semi-final sees Birmingham host Blackpool today.

Blackpool takes a 1-0 lead into the tie.
