Decades of hair cut for cause

HIS hair wasn't quite as long as Rapunzel's imposing locks but Michael Davies treasured them as much as did the beautiful young girl trapped atop a tower in the Brothers Grimm fairytale.

Mr Davies' pony-tail wasn't long enough for someone to climb to the top a tower but it was long enough to draw around 50 people to Tumbulgum Tavern last Saturday to see it shorn to raise funds for the Leukaemia Foundation's Shave for a Cure campaign.

The hair, which hadn't been cut, except for the odd snip to split-ends, since the mid 1980s, wound its way down to below Mr Davies waist.

When local hairdresser, Michelle, had done her best impersonation of Edward Scissorhands, Mr Davies had a short-back and sides.

Mr Davies lost his treasured locks following a losing bet made with his wife, Donna.

The wager? If Mrs Davies lost 10kg in weight, Mr Davies would have his mane mown.

"This was about the only way I could get him to have a hair-cut," said Mrs Davies.

"I had been at him for years to get it cut - I kept telling him that the '80s look had passed but he steadfastly refused to get within cooee of a pair of scissors.

"He only accepted the bet because he didn't think I'd achieve the weight loss - that really inspired me to shed the 10kg.

"I'm the big winner here - a lot healthier and now I have a husband living in the present."

The other big winner was the Leukaemia Foundation which had its coffers boosted by $2,300.
