EMERALD Brothers are top of the Central Highlands senior cricket competition ladder after securing a close-fought victory against traditional rivals Emerald Magpies at the weekend.

The Magpies, needing six runs off the last ball of the day to secure victory, fell short after a courageous run chase at the Emerald Showgrounds.

Brothers posted an imposing 231 off their allocated 40 overs as once again Brothers captain Chris O'Shea (108) plundered his second century in as many weeks.

The captain's knock, including seven boundaries and three sixes, was eventually ended by the bowling of Julian Curro (2-44).

O'Shea received able support from Martin Langan (46) and Cameron Keens (32). Nick Winen was dangerous for the Magpies and finished with figures of 2-26.

The Magpies top order made a solid start, despite some excellent swing bowling from Jamie Iker (1-21).

Jamie Smith (34) laid a solid platform for the middle order to capitalise on and despite the required run rate drifting beyond 10 an over, Shaun Parter (72) and Nev Suell (49) set about reeling in the Brothers' total.

Parter was all class and rarely looked troubled against the Brothers attack, in an innings that yielded 10 boundaries.

The wicket of Parter turned the match back the Brothers' way with the Magpies needing 14 off the last over for victory and only managed eight to end an entertaining match.
