CHRISTMAS lights have a way of brightening up the holiday season.

Flashing green Christmas trees, fat red Santas in sleighs and cute reindeer can really bring out the holiday spirit.

Every December people drive through the city to find magical displays of lighting and stop and stare in awe at the scenes created on and around people's homes and businesses.

There are plenty of prizes to be won in this year's Mackay Regional Lights Competition, including a $500 cash prize for the Daily Mercury's People's Choice Award for the best private home light scene.

Businesses are also joining in the fun to be in the running for a Daily Mercury advertising campaign worth $10,000, a $5000 SeaFM Radio campaign and a SeaFM Christmas Spirit Prize.

Daily Mercury promotions and marketing co-ordinator Nicole Reekie said the community really got involved in the competition.

"It's good to be involved," Ms Reekie said.

Entry into the Mackay Regional Lights competition closed yesterday, Ms Reekie said, and now it was time for people to drive around and pick their favourite.

A list of homes and businesses that have entered the competition can be found on Page 44 of today's paper.

Readers also have a chance to win $500 in the Reader's Choice category.

To vote, all you have to do is fill out the nomination form (also on Page 44).

Put it in an envelope labelled "Mackay Regional Lights Competition" and post it to PO Box 5666, MMC, 4741; or drop it to Mercury House, 38-40 Wellington St, Mackay.

People are also being encouraged to switch on their Christmas lights only between 6.30pm and 10.30pm.

  •  Christmas Lights competition bus tickets will be on sale from Monday, December 3
  •  Cost is $15/adults, $10/children, $45 a family of four
  •  The buses will leave from the Daily Mercury building at 6.45pm on December 10, 11, 12 and 13 and return at 10.30pm.
