A GOOD romance book must draw you in, make you laugh and make you cry in equal measures.
Skyward does just that as it charts the story of ER nurse Ella Majors, Marion Henderson and her father Harris.
Burned-out and unsure of her next step, Ella accepts the temporary position as caregiver to Marion Henderson - a frightened five-year-old who suffers from juvenile diabetes.
But she soon realises there is more sorrow in Marion's home than the little girl's illness can account for.
Harris Henderson, a single father, seems better able to deal with the wild birds he rehabilitates in his birds-of-prey sanctuary than with his own daughter.
Then something magical begins to happen - the timeless beauty of the South Carolina coast and the majestic grace of the wild birds weave a healing spell on the injured hearts at the sanctuary.
Skyward is a story of life, love and pain and you feel all of the characters' feelings, be it the dizzying high of true love, or the deepest despair for a life lost.
The characters are well-rounded and the language used makes this an easy and pleasurable book to read.
